Observing Excellence

Last weekend, I was at the CrossFit Norcal regional competition. It was an amazing day filled with displays of strength, power and determination. In one word: Excellence.

Other than thoroughly enjoying the experience, it made me think – What’s the effect of observing excellence?

On one hand, it’s tremendously motivating. I saw women and men perform some amazing feats of strength and endurance. It put me in the mindset of thinking “If they can do it, so can I.”

But I wondered what else I could take away from it, other than motivation.

Are there lessons to be learnt? What is it about the excellent performance that spoke to me?

Focus. To get to where they are, these athletes build on their strengths and worked on their weaknesses. They focused on their training, their nutrition and developing the right mindset to achieve their goal.

What about your life bothers you right now? On a scale of 1 to 10, how much does it bother you? What would it mean for you to make a real improvement in this area?

Commitment. These athletes focused and devoted themselves to doing the best they could, to achieving their full potential.

It reminded me of the truth that what you focus on and commit to working on gets improved.

Life is full of choices and if you want to achieve the results you want, you must commit to making the change happen 100%. It’s not enough to just imagine improvement, you must be willing to push other things aside in order to achieve it. Think about what you are willing to give up to make your improvement.

There you have it. Focus on it, commit to working on it and it will happen.

I learnt an even more important lesson though.

Excellence is relative.

I saw women pushing their limits and completing the final workout in 5 minutes. I also saw other women pushing their limits and completing it in 8 minutes…and 10 minutes and even some who were unable to finish within the time constraint. They ALL showed excellence.

Here is the point. In order to be excellent, you do not have to be the best. You just have to be YOUR best.

Our environment pushes us to compete. And competition is good. It makes you exceed your norm, or routine, and gets you out of your comfort zone.

But you need to realize one thing.

You should not compare yourself to everyone who pushes the limits of human potential – it wouldn’t be fair. You can’t be the best at everything you do. But, you can be excellent at everything you do. That is the true goal of competition – to bring out excellence within all of us.

So I ask you, what do you want to be excellent at? What will it take to make you excellent?
